RSC Steering Committee adopts position on Equal Representation Act
Washington, DC,
May 8, 2024
Chairman Kevin Hern (OK-01) and members of the Republican Study Committee’s Steering Committee voted this morning to adopt the following position on HR 7109, the Equal Representation Act. “The RSC Steering Committee supports the passage of the Equal Representation Act. This legislation would ensure that the Census Bureau include a citizenship question and that non-citizens are not counted toward apportionment for congressional districts or the Electoral College. “Voting is a privilege and responsibility that comes with American citizenship. As such, it is necessary that representation in Congress and the Electoral College reflects the American populace and does not provide greater weight to sanctuary states and cities. “The Trump Administration championed this important policy, and Congress should build on their efforts by passing the Equal Representation Act to ensure that a citizenship question is added to the census. RSC Steering applauds the efforts of Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) on this issue.” HR 7109 has the support of 114 Cosponsors in the House of Representatives. Senator Hagerty’s legislation in the Senate has 23 Cosponsors. A vote on HR 7109 is expected in the House this afternoon. ### |
