Dear Friend,
Last week, the House passed the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, which included the President's priorities on taxes, border security, spending cuts, and energy production.
This was a huge effort in the House over the last several months. For the tax writers on Ways and Means, we've been working on this for the last two years.
It has been my privilege to serve on Ways and Means these last few years as we laid the groundwork for exactly this moment. We have traveled the country - including a field hearing in Oklahoma in 2023 - to hear directly from the job creators and small businesses who utilized business provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). We heard from thousands of business owners and industry experts to find out what worked, what didn't, and what could use some tweaks when Republicans finally had the opportunity to update and make permanent the TCJA.
The historic election of Donald Trump last fall gave us that opportunity.
We have to remember why we're in this position: it's only because of Donald Trump's electoral victory. President Trump is the clear leader of the Republican Party, and he led both chambers of Congress to victory last fall.
As he travelled the campaign trail and met with Americans every single day, he truly did adapt his platform according to what he heard from the American people. That's how he came up with the idea to cut taxes on tips, as well as cut taxes on overtime pay for workers. These policies came straight from conversations he had with waitresses, factory workers, line cooks, and construction workers.
President Trump saw how the Biden economy was harming working families, and he developed these policies to provide those workers with much-needed relief.
I am proud of the work we did on the Ways and Means Committee to ensure these key promises were included in our final bill.
President Trump and his America First agenda were always driving this process, and I am proud to have stood by him the entire time. I've met with the President and his team nearly every week since he was elected to help make sure this One Big, Beautiful Bill included everything he wanted and to address any concerns.
Even with a majority in the House and Senate, Republicans have not been unified on this process. I hear from constituents all the time: why can't the Conference just rally behind the President? I share the same frustration! As a member of House Republican Leadership, it's been my job these last several months to help bring the Republican Conference together.
The left and their allies in the media have latched onto any division in the Conference. They're sharing Democrat talking points and making up bold-faced lies about what's in the bill, trying to further divide the Conference.
When President Trump came to Capitol Hill last week, his message was simple: put aside your differences and just pass the bill. The President's leadership was essential to this process, and because of his involvement, the last of the holdouts joined the Conference to pass the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.
I'm particularly proud to say that I have some legislation that made it into this final version of the bill. The WIRED Act, which I previously introduced last Congress with then-Senator J.D. Vance. The WIRED Act imposes a fee on remittances - or, money transfers from a bank in the United States to a bank in another country.
This is meant to target cartel activity and recoup some of the funds being sent out of the U.S. economy. The collected funds will then be used to bolster border security funding and help build the wall.
I modeled this bill after successful legislation happening right here in Oklahoma. The state imposed a 1% fee on remittances a few years ago, and it's resulted in over $10 million in revenue every year. I'm so glad this bill, developed right here in our home state, made it into the President's marquee legislation.
I'm also proud of the work we did to protect our Second Amendment and eliminate suppressors from the National Firearms Act. I've heard from a lot of constituents who this impacts; I was able to take your concerns, and the concerns of thousands of Second Amendment supporters around the country, directly to House leadership to get the language updated.
I will continue to keep you updated as we move forward in this process, and we will all celebrate once the President signs his One Big, Beautiful Bill into law!
